Tenryuji (天龍寺) was originally built in 1339 and is considered to be the most important temple in Kyoto's Arashiyama district. Although much of the original building has been lost to wars or fires over the years (and restored during the Meiji Period 1868-1912), it is still ranked as the first of Kyoto's five great Zen temples. The garden, created by the famous garden designer Muso Soseki, has remained untouched in its original form.
Tenryuji is registered as a world heritage site and serves as the head of the Rinzai Zen sect of Japanese Buddhism.
