Edo 300 years ago was a strict "zero waste society."
There were over 1,000 recycling businesses in the city of Edo, and everything was reused, from paper to ash to cloth.
There were "ikakeya" (metalworkers) who repaired broken pots and pans, "secondhand clothing stores" that resold used clothing, and "shimogoe-gai" (night soil buyers) who even purchased human waste, etc.
Edo was the ultimate circular economy, far ahead of today's SDGs.
This 10-minute video provides an easy-to-understand explanation of how it worked and the reality of the amazing recycling economy, as well as the waste problem and landfill waste issues.
