Today we'll be introducing Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a poet who is representative of the Manyoshu. All of the waka poems introduced in this article are sure to be considered Hitomaro's signature poems. Of course, we'll also be explaining the third poem in the Hyakunin Isshu, "Ashihiki no yamadori no shidari tail no naganagashi yoru wo hitori kamo nemu (I sleep alone, as I linger on the long, flowing tail of a mountain dwarf bird)."

Many of Hitomaro's waka poems can be enjoyed even without modern translations, and it's truly amazing that their appeal has not faded at all even after more than a thousand years!
