CRAFT CHRONICLES ep.104 → The Art Behind the Art

Edo Hyogu (Tokyo) – Country Registered Traditional Craft

At its core, Edo Hyogu (江戸表具) sits between art, architecture, and conservation. These Edo artisans called hyogushi (表具師) refined techniques in response to climate and daily life, adjusting paste strength, backing, and tools to ensure long-term stability. These practical, often invisible decisions define Edo Hyogu’s durability.

By dismantling, repairing, and remounting works, master craftsmen also allow artworks to survive and remain relevant across centuries.

Today, Edo Hyogu extends beyond traditional rooms, with scrolls and screens used as architectural elements in modern interiors, bridging historical technique with contemporary space.
