U.S. President Donald Trump held a press conference earlier today, saying, "The military operation against President Maduro in Venezuela was the most effective and powerful demonstration of military power in U.S. history." Multiple explosions occurred in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, early on the 3rd, and reports from the Associated Press and other sources indicated that low-flying aircraft could be heard. President Trump also announced at a press conference that the U.S. military had successfully launched an attack. The Trump administration has been increasing pressure on the Maduro regime, alleging it is involved in drug smuggling into the United States. According to CBS, the U.S. military targeted military facilities and ports, and Army special forces detained the president and his wife. President Trump recently posted a photo on his social media account claiming, "President Maduro is aboard a U.S. Navy ship." U.S. Attorney General Bondi posted on social media that Maduro has been indicted in the United States and that "he will face consequences in court." In response to the attack, the Venezuelan government issued a statement declaring a national emergency, "condemning the U.S. military aggression." The United Nations has also requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the attack, saying it "fails to adhere to international law," and that "this development could set a dangerous precedent." Countries such as China and Russia, which have friendly ties with the Maduro regime, have also condemned the attack. Experts have pointed out that "it is difficult to justify this action under international law." Professor Kotani of Meikai University, an expert on international relations and security, said, "I think it is extremely difficult to justify this action under international law. Since it was a military operation on foreign territory and the removal of that country's leader, it is not unreasonable to view this as a clear case of aggression." He went on to point out that the Trump administration's motivation for the attack was not only to prevent drug smuggling, but also to secure oil interests in Venezuela, one of the world's leading oil-producing countries, and to restore its popularity. He also analyzed that the Japanese government's response will be a key focus going forward. #USA #PresidentTrump #Venezuela #PresidentMaduro #TetsuoKotani
